Jonathan Gater Sworn in as Under Sheriff of Berkshire

Jonathan Gater

Jonathan Gater, Joint Managing Partner at Blandy & Blandy LLP (pictured far right), was sworn in as Under Sheriff of the Royal County of Berkshire alongside the incoming High Sheriff, Sarah Scrope (pictured far left), replacing the outgoing High Sheriff, Victoria Fishburn (pictured second from the right) on 4 April 2017.

Both the High Sheriff and Under Sheriff’s declarations were taken by Mrs Justice McGowan (pictured third from the right), a Judge of the High Court. The ceremony took place at Reading Crown Court with the Lord Lieutenant of Berkshire also being present (pictured second from the left).

The role of Under Sheriff has been held by a representative at Blandy & Blandy for many years. Jonathan Gater has held the role since 2002.

The first recorded High Sheriff of Berkshire died in the Battle of Hastings at the start of the Norman conquest in 1066. The role is now largely ceremonial but carries the status of being the Queen’s highest judicial officer in the county.
