Theatregoers are set for the Time of their life, with a brand new theatre set to open in West London in 2025.
The 670 capacity Capital Theatre, located at Westfield in Shepherd's Bush, had its Premises Licence approved in the Spring ahead of its planned opening this Autumn.
Sue Dowling, a partner and expert on alcohol and entertainment venue licensing at leading Thames Valley law firm Blandy & Blandy, advised West London Stage Ltd regarding the Capital Theatre’s licensing requirements. The venue is a new 35,000 square foot theatre set to occupy part of the former Debenhams store at Westfield. The venue will also include a foyer café, a box office and merchandise store open seven days a week.
‘Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story Live on Stage’ is set to be the Capital Theatre’s opening production in October. The project is a joint venture by Karl Sydow and Adam Kenwright, son of theatre producer and former Everton Football Club chairman Bill Kenwright CBE.
Following an application made to Hammersmith and Fulham Licensing Authority to allow licensable activities, four objections were subsequently received from local residents. Sue Dowling successfully represented the Theatre at a contested licensing hearing on 5 February, with approval granted by the Local Authority’s Licensing Sub-Committee.
On behalf of Capital Theatre, Karl Sydow and Adam Kenwright commented: "We are thrilled about the approval of the premises licence and look forward to joining the Westfield London and Hammersmith and Fulham communities. We appreciated the feedback from local residents as we look to deliver first class entertainment to the area and look ahead to opening the doors of the Capital Theatre in October 2025 with Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story Live on Stage." Adam Kenwright continued: "We will be launching with a world-renowned production that has a track record of more than a decade's sold-out seasons."
Sue Dowling said: “It has been a delight to assist West London Stage Ltd in securing a new Licence ready for the opening of Capital Theatre and the launch of ‘Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story Live on Stage’. The stage, set in-the-round with the audience only nine rows deep, is bound to result in a fantastic ‘close to the action’ experience!”
