Blandy & Blandy Has Vested Interest in Rugby World Cup

Lawyers at Blandy & Blandy, like most of the country, are looking forward to the start of the Rugby World Cup. But the firm also has a vested interest in this international sporting event, having advised the RFU (Rugby Football Union) on the necessary alcohol and regulated entertainment requirements for match and non-match day activities at Twickenham Stadium.

Blandy & Blandy’s renowned Venue Licensing team, led by partner Sue Dowling, has advised the RFU concerning its alcohol, regulated entertainment and gaming licensing requirements for over 14 years and has been involved in its major development projects including the re-licensing of the Stadium following the construction of the new South Stand, and the licensing of the Twickenham Marriott Hotel.

In relation to the Rugby World Cup, Sue said, “Being involved in this unique project has been fascinating and a great opportunity. We assisted the RFU in applying for an ‘Overlay’ Premises Licence to ‘sit on top of’ its day to day licence – to cover the wide variety of licensable activities planned at the Stadium during this international sporting event - including at the opening and closing ceremonies.

As well as making the necessary formal application, this also involved considerable negotiation with the Police; Environmental Health; Licensing and other Authorities but there was a clear willingness from all concerned to get behind this incredible event – which helped the process to run smoothly.  We wish all those involved with the World Cup a very successful, entertaining, tournament.”

Blandy & Blandy’s Venue Licensing team is top ranked in both Chambers UK and The Legal 500, with the latter naming Sue Dowling as a ‘leading individual’ in her field.
