Charities: Strengthen Governance Through Tailored Legal Training

Charities should consider how practical legal training could help trustees, senior leadership teams and staff strengthen governance, manage risks and support their organisations’ long-term resilience.

Blandy & Blandy’s Charities and Not for Profits team is highlighting the value of tailored training covering areas including trustee responsibilities, governing documents and compliance.

The cost-effective sessions are designed around each charity’s structure, activities and challenges, helping those responsible for running it understand their legal obligations and apply good governance in everyday decisions.

Jenny Scott, associate at Blandy & Blandy, said: “Trustees bring valuable experience and commitment to their charities, but understanding how legal duties apply in practice can sometimes feel daunting. Tailored training helps turn those responsibilities into practical knowledge, giving trustees and staff greater confidence when making decisions, identifying risks and responding to challenges.

It is not simply about compliance. Strong governance helps charities protect their reputation, use their resources effectively and stay focused on the people and communities they support.”

Governance and trustee training can cover managing conflicts of interest, financial oversight, delegation and serious incident reporting. A governing document health check can also help boards understand their charity’s powers, appointment procedures and decision-making requirements.

Complaints handling is another area where training may help organisations respond fairly and consistently, maintain clear records and recognise when concerns need to be escalated. This is particularly pertinent in data protection compliance and the increase in AI generated complaints.

Depending on their activities, charities may also benefit from sessions on safeguarding, fundraising, intellectual property, mergers and succession planning.

The team highlights that training need not be a one-off exercise. Induction sessions for new trustees, regular refreshers and bespoke support when circumstances change can all help maintain knowledge and confidence.

Blandy & Blandy provides tailored in-house training for trustees, senior leadership teams and other charity staff. The firm has offices in Reading, Henley-on-Thames, Wokingham and, by appointment London, and is recommended in The Legal 500.
