Blandy & Blandy was recently represented at the UK Environmental Law Association's (UKELA) annual conference in Brighton.
UKELA was founded in 1988 with the objectives of promoting the enhancement and conservation of the environment in the UK and advancing the education of the public in all matters relating to the development, teaching, application and practise of law relating to the environment.
Partner and head of the firm's leading Planning & Environmental Law team Karen Jones, has been a member of the organisation since 1992 and has attended the annual conference since 2006.
This July over 200 UKELA members gathered to discuss the new international context for environmental law and the implications for environmental law of the UK’s referendum result on Brexit.
The theme of the conference was ‘International Environmental Law, from Global to Local’ and the event welcomed speakers and participants from countries and regions including the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe and the UK.
Karen commented: “This year’s conference is timely in looking at the international context which will be thrown into sharp relief following the UK’s Brexit vote. It will be important for environmental lawyers to be fully aware of the implications given that the EU has been the fundamental driving force of many environmental protections over the last forty years.
The UKELA network is of tremendous benefit in keeping our knowledge of environmental law at the cutting-edge. Advances in environmental law are rapid and it can frequently be an area where law firms have little or no expertise. This niche expertise is of considerable benefit to clients, particularly landowners and those who have interests in the waste and water sectors."
