New High Sheriff Sworn in at Reading Crown Court

Last week Justice of the Supreme Court, Lord Hughes of Ombersley, officiated at a ceremony at which the new High Sheriff of Berkshire, Graham Barker, was sworn in.

The office of High Sheriff is an independent, non-political Royal appointment, and lasts for one year.

Jonathan Gater, Joint Managing Partner at Blandy & Blandy, was also sworn in as Under Sheriff for Berkshire, a role he has held since 2002. The role of Under Sheriff has been held by a representative at Blandy & Blandy for many years.

The first recorded High Sheriff of Berkshire died in the Battle of Hastings at the start of the Norman conquest in 1066.  The role is now largely ceremonial but carries the status of being the Queen’s highest judicial officer in the county.
