Training Contracts

We attach a great deal of importance to recruiting trainee solicitors, who we view as an important investment in our firm's future.

Many of our current partners and colleagues trained at Blandy & Blandy, including our joint managing partners Tim Clark and Jonathan Gater and our training partner, Debbie Brett.

Wherever possible, we aim to retain and continue to develop those who have trained with us, as highlighted in some our colleagues' comments below.

Over time, our successful approach has been recognised through a series of rankings, nominations and awards, including at the LawCareers.Net Training & Recruitment Awards, in the Lex 100 Survey and by Best Companies. Factors such as the quality of work undertaken and the level of client contact our trainees enjoy, alongside a welcoming and supportive culture, job satisfaction and good work/life balance have all been praised by our trainee solicitors,

Our trainee solicitors typically spend six months in four departments (known as seats) over a two year period. Wherever possible, we aim to cater to your individual preferences.

Trainee solicitors typically share office space with their assigned supervisor (a partner or associate solicitor), to support continuous professional development and allow you to experience the day-to-day challenges of a qualified solicitor.

Trainees also complete a compulsory PSC (professional skills course). There are three core areas covered - business skills, advocacy and client care – while you are also able to choose electives in areas of law that are of greatest interest. Most of these training days take place in Oxford, Guildford or London and it is a good chance for you to meet fellow trainees from other law firms in the region.

There are regular informal reviews and a formal appraisal is held every six months to review and discuss your progress and identify areas for future development.

Trainees are actively encouraged to attend, and sometimes asked to support, seminars, networking events and careers fairs.

Seats are typically available in the following departments:

  • Commercial Property
  • Corporate & Commercial
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Employment
  • Family
  • Planning & Environmental
  • Probate, Tax & Trusts
  • Residential Property
