Our firm:

Blandy & Blandy is a leading Thames Valley law firm, with offices in Reading and Henley-on-Thames. With a team of 50 specialist solicitors and advisers, we are here to represent our clients in life and business, committed to developing long-lasting relationships and to delivering outstanding client care. Our successful approach is reflected in a series of rankings, nominations and awards and through the outstanding feedback we continue to receive. Since 2003, we have also held the Law Society’s Lexcel quality mark, which recognises firms that achieve excellence in legal practice management and client care.

This role:

We currently have the following vacancy to join our Wills, Probate, Tax & Trusts team, based in Reading.

Probate, Tax and Trusts Solicitor (Minimum 5 years’ PQE)

We are ranked as a top tier firm in the UK's leading legal directories, The Legal 500 and Chambers HNW, and in 2019 we were named 'Best Probate Law Firm - London & South East' at the UK Probate Research Awards.

You will work on an interesting and varied caseload from day one.  The department is very busy but we are a close knit team and very supportive of each other.  Whilst you will run many of your own files (and supervise junior fee earners), you will also become involved on larger cases with more experienced team members which will expand your knowledge and offer a genuine opportunity to develop which will be fully supported by the firm. Your workload will be broad and will extend from Wills and LPAs for clients with large taxable estates (where you might become involved in wider lifetime planning strategies) to more modest individuals with non-taxable but often, complex requirements in other ways. You will be experienced in handing Estate Administration (including intestacies) from start to finish (including advising on tax during the administration period and you may have some cross-border experience or experience in dealing with digital assets) but you will be happy to ask for help if required. You will also become involved in some of our ongoing Trusts (including advising on Trust constitution and taxation and you may even have separate tax qualifications). You might also have expertise in Lifetime Affairs. We are looking for someone who is STEP qualified and who will be able to hit the ground running, act as a role model for junior fee earners and become an integral part of our top-tier ranked team. You will be happy to attend networking events and become involved in business development initiatives (and you may even drive these forward yourself).

"One of the strongest private client teams in the south of England." - Chambers HNW

“High net worth individuals, multimillion-pound trusts and estates, and the owners and directors of family and owner-managed businesses retain the practice.” - The Legal 500

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing an agreed caseload of clients in conjunction with the senior solicitors and Department Manager
  • Processing clients’ cases on a timely and cost effective basis
  • Maintaining the highest professional standards in accordance with the firm’s objectives and comply with the firm’s quality standards
  • Keeping clients fully informed of the range of services that the firm offers
  • Supervising junior staff, particularly trainees, from time to time

The successful candidate will:

  • Have at least a 2.1 degree
  • Have a minimum of 5 years’ PQE
  • Have completed training at a recognised and respected firm
  • Be enthusiastic and hard working
  • Have good written and verbal communication skills
  • Have experience of working in a specialist private client team
  • Be a team player and reputable
  •  Share and embody our values of excellence, integrity and approachability

This role:

The application process for a training contract, based in Reading, is now open.

Trainee Solicitor

Many of our current partners and colleagues trained at Blandy & Blandy, including our joint managing partners Tim Clark and Jonathan Gater and our training partner, Debbie Brett.

We attach a great deal of importance to recruiting trainee solicitors, who we view as an important investment in our firm's future. Wherever possible, we aim to retain and continue to develop those who have trained with us.

Over time, our successful approach has been recognised through a series of rankings, nominations and awards, including at the LawCareers.Net Training & Recruitment Awards, in the Lex 100 Survey and by Best Companies. Factors such as the quality of work undertaken and the level of client contact our trainees enjoy, alongside a welcoming and supportive culture, job satisfaction and good work/life balance have all been praised by our trainee solicitors.

Training programme:

Our trainee solicitors typically spend six months in four departments (known as seats) over a two year period. Wherever possible, we aim to cater to your individual preferences.

Trainee solicitors typically share office space with their assigned supervisor (a partner or associate solicitor), to support continuous professional development and allow you to experience the day-to-day challenges of a qualified solicitor.

Trainees also complete a compulsory PSC (professional skills course). There are three core areas covered - business skills, advocacy and client care – while you are also able to choose electives in areas of law that are of greatest interest. Most of these training days take place in Oxford, Guildford or London and it is a good chance for you to meet fellow trainees from other law firms in the region.

There are regular informal reviews and a formal appraisal is held every six months to review and discuss your progress and identify areas for future development.

Trainees are actively encouraged to attend, and sometimes asked to support, seminars, networking events and careers fairs.

Seats are typically available in the following departments:

  • Commercial Property
  • Corporate & Commercial
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Employment
  • Family
  • Planning & Environmental
  • Probate, Tax & Trusts
  • Residential Property

To be considered, candidates must have:

  • A strong academic background
  • 2:1 (hons) degree or above
  • Completed (or expect to) the LPC
  • Demonstrable relevant work experience
  • Enthusiasm, resourcefulness and excellent communication and IT skills

A competitive salary and benefits package is offered.

Please note that we are not accepting applications from candidates who have applied previously.

To apply for September 2022, please complete our application form and return a copy by email to hr@blandy.co.uk by Tuesday 1 March 2022.

We are open to receiving applications for 2023, from those wishing to qualify via the SQE route (please indicate this on your form) as well as those who are seeking a training contract. The deadline to apply for September 2023 is 30 June 2022.
